- How much is your hard disk worth? If we told you that you could delete up
- to 80% of the files on your hard disk without deleting any programs or data
- files you use, how much would that be worth to you? It would be like
- buying one or two additional disk drives and connecting them to your
- system!
-
- The ViDir/ViRes File Monitoring System can guide you through a few easy
- steps that allow you to:
-
- * Determine what files are never used on your hard disk;
-
- * Save those unused files to another disk, and
-
- * Delete the unused files from your hard disk.
-
-
- The ViDir/ViRes File Monitoring System also allows you to determine:
-
- * Which, of all your files, are used the most so you can move them to a
- RAM disk.
-
- * What word processor and spread sheet files you need to take with you on
- a trip to accomplish work on your portable or remote PC.
-
- * Which word processor files you need to put on a diskette to take over to
- your secretary's PC to print a document on a laser printer.

- These questions cannot be answered with any software currently available on
- the market. That includes, in the commercial software arena, MS-DOS, DR
- DOS, Norton Utilities, PCTOOLS, Norton Commander, XTreePro Gold, or any
- other software package encountered by the staff at Vahnzinn international.
- Further, no shareware or freeware programs encountered or even read about
- offer this capability.
-
- The ViDir/ViRes File Monitoring System is an easy-to-use, complementary
- pair of programs that provide a complete file monitoring system. They
- monitor every file on every disk and diskette on your PC, no matter where
- it is located, what it is called, when or how it is referenced, or what
- directory it is in. The ViDir/ViRes system saves and tracks every use of
- the files; this includes reading and writing files, executing programs, and
- program overlay requests. It maintains the date and time of when the file
- was last referenced. It records the file's drive name (A, B, C, D,...) and
- the directory (\dir). It records the invoking program name, if any. And
- the ViDir/ViRes File Monitoring System maintains a count of how many times
- the file is referenced.
-
- Armed with this information, the answers to the above become obvious.
- (Refer to the User Manual and Help File's [ViDir.HLP] "Examples" section
- for the specifics.) ViDir/ViRes commands assist the user in saving unused
- files to diskette, removing those files from the primary disk, and copying
- files that are used to a diskette for temporary use on another PC. [Please
- observe copyright laws and license restrictions regarding copying software
- and using it on another PC.]
-
- This version of the ViDir/ViRes File Monitoring System does not execute
- under Microsoft's Windows product. It does, however, monitor all files
- used by Windows and any products executed under Windows.
-
- The ViDir/ViRes File Monitoring System consists of two significant
- programs. The ViRes monitor is also known as a TSR, or Terminate and Stay
- Resident, program. It links to certain DOS interrupt handlers (the things
- that programs and commands use to reference files) and then yields control
- back to you and DOS. The ViRes program remains in memory after it returns
- control to you, taking up a small amount of main memory. It is responsible
- for tracking every file reference made on your PC. It keeps the file
- reference list (i.e., the directory) in memory.
-
- The ViDir directory command is the other significant program. It provides
- access to the ViRes directory. ViDir menu commands allow you to view and
- print the directory, save it to disk, and load the in-memory directory from
- a version previously saved on disk (so you can track file usage across
- sessions). ViDir menus also help you maintain and remove used and unused
- files on your disk.
